The rules — as played
Setting up
- 01
Setup
Players sit in a circle where everyone can see everyone. One person is the moderator: they run the night script, announce the dawn, and never play a role. The host device deals roles secretly — each player privately views their role once and puts the device down.
- 02
Roles and scaling
The deal contains one mafia for roughly every four players (one mafia at the minimum table, adding one more per four additional players), exactly one detective, exactly one doctor, and villagers filling every remaining seat. Roles are secret: you may claim anything aloud, but showing your dealt role to another player is forbidden.
- 03
Objective
The village wins by eliminating every mafia member. The mafia win by surviving until they equal the number of non-mafia players still alive.
How it's played
- 04
The night
The moderator calls night and everyone closes their eyes. In order: the mafia wake and silently choose a victim, the detective wakes and investigates one player, the doctor wakes and chooses one player to protect. Each group closes their eyes before the next wakes. Only the moderator sees any of it.
- 05
The mafia's choice
The living mafia silently agree on one victim per night; a majority of living mafia must point at the same player. If they cannot agree before the moderator ends their turn, no one is killed that night.
- 06
The investigation
Each night the detective points at one living player. The moderator silently signals whether that player is mafia or not. The detective may share, spin, or sit on what they learned — nothing obliges them to tell the truth by day.
- 07
The doctor's protection
Each night the doctor points at one living player to protect, and may choose themselves. The doctor may not protect the same player on two consecutive nights. If the mafia's victim was protected, no one dies and the moderator announces that no one died.
- 08
The day and the vote
At dawn the moderator announces who died — never their role — or that no one died. The living discuss, accuse, and defend for as long as the table wants. The day ends with a vote: a majority of living players eliminates one player; a tie eliminates no one. Roles are only revealed when the game ends.
- 09
The dead are silent
Eliminated players stay at the table but may not speak, gesture, or react to anything for the rest of the game. They keep their eyes open at night. A dead player who influences the game earns the moderator's discretion, up to reversing a day's vote.
- 10
Winning
The game ends immediately when either condition is met: all mafia are eliminated (village wins), or the living mafia equal the living non-mafia (mafia win, since the village can no longer out-vote them). The moderator then reveals every role.
The prose is the game. Every change here is saved as a new version, and every match ever played pins the exact rules it was played under.
